Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Concrete Corner.
It is with great excitement that we launch this first edition of The Concrete Corner, a
technical note dedicated to insightful, practical, and forward-looking discussions on concrete technology, design, and application within Uganda’s construction and infrastructure sector.

For our maiden issue, we deliberately focus on the realities of our urban and
environmental challenges; particularly in Kampala and beyond. While compressive
strength has long been the dominant metric for approving mixes and projects, Issue 001 shifts the spotlight to durability as the primary driver of sustainable and resilient concrete infrastructure, especially in aggressive exposure conditions such as sewage-loaded urban runoff.

This issue aims to bridge the gap between traditional engineering priorities and long-term performance needs. Inside, you will find practical guidance addressing why durability often matters more than strength alone, particularly where concrete is exposed to constant moisture, chemical attack, and limited maintenance. Key features include:

  • A real-world durability checklist for concrete in sewage-loaded urban drainage
    environments.

  • Critical durability tests beyond early-age strength, including permeability and
    chemical resistance.

  • Practical on-site inspection guidance for urban drainage channels.
Binder and cement selection driven by exposure conditions rather than strength
    targets alone.

  • Approaches for communicating durability value to clients in terms of service life,
    maintenance, and public safety.

  • Current trends, standards, and best practices supporting verifiable durability-based decisions.

In settings where concrete failure carries serious economic, environmental, and safety
implications, durability can no longer play second fiddle to short-term strength.

We hope this issue equips you with tools to deliver infrastructure that withstands not only initial loads, but decades of real-world demands. We warmly welcome your feedback,
insights, and contributions as we grow future editions of The Concrete Corner.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Kind regards,
